Edit: The title should read “Other XULRunner Software”. Thanks
to Anonymous for pointing that out. Guess I was sleeping on that one.
Just some additional information about other software based on XULRunner:
From Songbird’s website:
” Songbird is a Web player built from Firefox’s browser engine. Songbird is open source, will run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and supports user contributed, cross-platform extensions.
Songbird can do everything you’d expect a media player to do. Play music from your computer, as well as from the Web in one integrated user experience. If you run a music service, you can leverage Songbird’s APIs to create deeply integrated stores and user features.”
In short, a new open source media player application is out there on the cards, developed by Pioneers of the Inevitable LLC, a “small, chirpy team of digital media innovators”. After I downloaded, installed and used it, I realised that this application is extremely pre-alpha quality release; it would be good for anybody who wants to contribute to a potentially great product. And maybe a new “Edge” website too. There were plenty of bugs, crashes and quirkiness but also massive potential in this proof-of-concept application.
Additionally, a new Mozilla Composer (Nvu version 2?) based on XULRunner as well may possibly be released by Daniel Glazman in the future.
Total number of possible XULRunner-related applications in the future, as of mid-2006:
- Firefox - Internet browser
- Thunderbird - Email software
- Sunbird - Calendar
- Nvu - HTML editor
- Songbird - Media player
- Chatzilla - IRC client
- Other XULRunner applications
Do note that Nvu and Songbird are not officially related to the Mozilla Foundation.

Please note that XPToolkit is the old (XPFE) toolkit and none of the listed applications use that anymore. http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/XULRunner_Hall_of_Fame lists various XULRunner applications.

Another application that’s based upon the mozilla code is Celtx - http://celtx.com/ a tool for screenwriting and production. I’m not really sure if it qualifies as an XULRunner application (basically, it’s a “standalone extension” of Firefox, not really a completely new application), but it does build heavily upon the code.

Flock would be listed as a “sub-set” of Firefox.

Yes, Nvu2. XULrunner-based.
And it’s highly time to move from XULrunner to more understandable “Mozilla something” or “Firefox something” name….

Wengo is already available as a xulrunner-based standalone app. See my blog.

On Win32 Songbird is stable for me but I have heard about the instabilities on other platforms.

Don’t forget Verbosio - http://verbosio.mozdev.org - this is intended as a XULRunner-based extensible XML editor.

There’s also Internet TV thingy Democracy Player (go to http://www.getdemocracy.com/ for downloads and info). Like Songbird, it uses VLC for the actual media playing (though I understand Songbird plans to move away from exclusively relying on VLC).

Don’t forget that SeaMonkey is also working towards being XULRunner based. Toolkit transition (http://wiki.mozilla.org/SeaMonkey:Toolkit_Transition) first, then XULRunner soon after hopefully.
