Well, this, again, is just a guess, but I wonder if it hasn't more to do with your mail server's timestamp - see if Outlook Express (or another email client) gives you the same kind of behavior - if it does, Thunderbird is in the clear, and your email provider, in trouble :)

I have had the same problem as Robin et al describe maybe several weeks ago. Then I mistakenly thought it was too many messages in my in box - - - so I created a kind of holding file to place all incoming emails right after I saw them in the in box. I too had difficulty deleting or dragging incoming messages to the trash file. When the problem returned yesterday evening,I thought perhaps my drives needed defragging - - - that had given the appearance of working before. This time nothing seems to work. No incoming messgages are visible even though I can see them on webmail. Even the sent file with nothing apparently in it starts by "building a summary file." For some reason, there is no problem with my auxiliary Thunderbird (business) email inbox.

Robin, just saw your last post "in the inbox appeared a completely empty "email" dated 12/31/1969 7:00pm" - That could confirm the hypothesis with mail server's erroneous timestamps. Richard, what about your timestamps?

This is weird, I have never seen such problems with Thunderbird, except synchronization hickups when using Saved Search Folders.

Are you all using a Global Inbox?

Go to Tools > Account Settings > [The Email Account]
Then, select Server Settings, and click the Advanced button.

Do all your email accounts use Global inbox? (This is just a shot in the dark, if you have already read and implemented suggesstions listed on:
<a href="http://www.freeemailtutorials.com/mozillaThunderbird/generalMaintenance.cwd" rel="nofollow">http://www.freeemailtutorials.com/mozillaThunderbird/generalMaintenance.cwd</a>

Robin, 179 is fine as far as quantity; Stacey, that's a lot of mail, but Thunderbird should be able to handle it. Try setting up the account with, say, Outlook Express. I know that this kind of problem sometimes arises when your mail provider doesn't provide accurate timestamps, so old emails are downloaded again.

Let me know how that goes

I'm having the same problem as Robin regarding the 'Building Summary File for Inbox'. My Inbox mail is stored locally, and it still takes several minutes to load, and gives an incorrect number of messages. The number increases and is not real - went form 1777 to 6853 in about 10 minutes. Also seems to be giving my harddrive a workout. I want to roll back to a previous version of TB, but no longer have the installation exe from the previous versions.

This only seems to be a problem for my Inbox. I moved all my messages into a backup folder, so Inbox is empty, but the 'Building Summary file....' message and several minutes of loading continues.

My love for Thunderbird is waning. After many attempts, I was able to drag an email to a local folder ... but in its place in the inbox appeared a completely empty "email" dated 12/31/1969 7:00pm.

I'm on a Windows XP box if that helps with any of this.

Thanks.

Well, that was a thought. Thunderbird tells me there are 179 messages in my inbox but there are only 55 showing. The largest is 109kb and the majority are 10kb or smaller. I can delete from my inbox, but I cannot move or drag/drop individual emails to my local folders. I went to the webmail for my ISP and there are indeed 55 emails in my inbox. Any other ideas?

Robin, it sounds like a problem you might have with your email folders, especially if they are sizeable:

This could help (general maintenance tips):
