Released on 11 Jan 06, and this changelog was last updated on 23 Apr 06.
Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 has been released. Release notes are available. This post lists the improvements in Thunderbird 1.5 over the previous aviary branch release 1.0.7. Do note that this list is not exhaustive. It is based on previous changelogs for versions 1.1a1, 1.1a2, 1.5b1, 1.5b2, 1.5rc1 and 1.5rc2.
Generally, with the release of 1.5, the stability of the program has been improved immensely, coupled with better search capabilities compared to the 1.0.x Aviary branch releases. Attachments can now be deleted from emails while support for podcasting, Google Maps and improved spam filtering have been added. Additionally, there is a built-in phishing detector and the program now auto-saves drafts, so in case the program or OS crashes, the draft will not be lost. Spell checking while typing is now possible, and software update improvements have been implemented similar to that of Firefox 1.5.
Improvements over Thunderbird 1.0.x Aviary Branch:
New features:
- 2920, 288273, 298860: Deleting attachments from messages.

- 290237: Support for server side spam filtering.
-

- 298969: Ability to create message filter actions for forwarding and replying (with a template).
-
Backend
Impact key for security issues listed on the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisories webpage:
- Critical: Vulnerability can be used to run attacker code and install software, requiring no user interaction beyond normal browsing.
- High: Vulnerability can be used to gather sensitive data from sites in other windows or inject data or code into those sites, requiring no more than normal browsing actions.
- Moderate: Vulnerabilities that would otherwise be High or Critical except they only work in uncommon non-default configurations or require the user to perform complicated and/or unlikely steps.
- Low: Minor security vulnerabilities such as Denial of Service attacks, minor data leaks, or spoofs. (Undetectable spoofs of SSL indicia would have “High” impact because those are generally used to steal sensitive data intended for other sites.)

Hmm.. so if its announced on mozilla.com then it IS released, or is it in some sort of before-official but already-avaiable release state?

Is the trashy spam filter improved? This is one of my main complaints. No amount of training will get it to work properly

Any idea if this be can installed directly over RC2, or does RC2 need to be uninstalled first?

There is a very annoying bug that I’ve observed since I first installed Thunderbird 1.0 but I’ve never seen a fix for it that I recognized. The bug is the failure to advance to the next unread message when the message is in a different folder. This action is very unpredictable. Sometimes it works but usually it doesn’t. I’m using 1.0.6 currently. If anyone recognizes this bug as being fixed, I’d like to know about it.

Still no way to easily export and import mailboxes to allow for backups or for easily moving your mail to a new computer?
This is a basic function that should exist.
JoeP | 13-Jan-06 at 3:23 pm | Permalink
Warning (and most important) - still no facility/program to easily back out of Thunderbird and move (export) its mail folders back into Outlook or OE. Backing out is a long, tedious and multi-step nightmare involving finding, copying & renaming all of Thunderbird’s mail files, installing Eudora Lite, copying the renamed files into Eudora, starting Eudora, opening the copied mail folders, closing Eudora, starting OE and importing from Eudora. Expect to get only about 80% of your mail back, some which will be unreadable.
Looking through the fixes in v.1.5 I also did not see patches for the following;
In Compose:
————
1. Cursor frequently disappears.
2. The cursor does not always respond to a space bar press at the end of word - even though space press registered. Pressing the space bar again results in 2 spaces!
3. The cursor frequently freezes when pressing either the right or left arrow keys.
4. Pressing the up/down arrow keys to move to the line above or below often repositions the cursor at the top or bottom of the message, instead of the adjacent line.
5. Extra CTRL-L keystrokes needed to create a link placed in a message from the “Send Link” in Firebird.
6. Spell checker very primitive (in comparison to OE).
Other:
——-
1. Thunderbird unexpectedly renames mail folders with 8 character number/letter patterns.
2. Numerous mail messages duplicated but the text was blank.
Conclusion:
———–
Thunderbird is not ready for prime time in either SOHO or business. OE may be antiquated and featureless by comparison but it is consistent, fast, solid, easy to use and has the best spell checker out there.

I find the easiest way to move mail between apps is to copy the mail folder back into an IMAP folder, then re-read it in the alternate mail reader. No need for an intermediate step.
In the meantime, a recent upgrade from Exchange Server 4 to Exchange Server 2003 has reduced the SMTP server to local mail only. Since this server allowed me to use Thunderbird with the company mail system, I’d be very interested to know if this is an Exchange regression : perhaps it’s a local policy change that someone’s lying about.

I just upgraded to 1.5 from 1.0.7. Thunderbird refuses to Launch!!!!
What can I do? Can you assist? I am not a geek, but I am afraid I’ll quickly become one after fixing this problem.
Thanks for any help that you can provide. I live on my Email.

Steve, I assume you are referring to Firefox
v 1.0.7 and you hadn’t any problems running Thunderbird under v 1.0.5 of Firefox. Version 1.0.5 of Firefox is 2 versions back - the most current version of Firefox is 1.5, and the newly released version of Thunderbird is also 1.5.
If Firefox 1.0.7 is giving Thunderbird grief as you describe, first thing I would do is back up the entire Documents and Settings folder (and all it sub-folders). This is where both the Firefox and Thunderbird profile files and Email data folders reside - usually under one of the Application Data folders. I can’t be more specific since I uninstalled Thunderbird sometime ago but just get it all for now. This way if things get really bad, you have a current backup.
I assume you are running XP so now do a system roll back to a time prior to when you updated to v 1.0.7 of Firefox. Go to Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore and select Restore My Computer to an Earlier Time. Click Next and follow the on screen instructions.
If this doesn’t make things right, uninstall Firefox 1.0.7 (via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel) and reinstall Firefox 1.0.5. If you don’t have a copy on your hard drive, you will need to download it - I don’t know if Mozilla keeps the older versions, I have a copy but I would have to Email it to you.
Hope this helps.

Chris (called you Steve by accident - another senior moment) - I just realized Thunderbird’s release #’s are the same as Firefox’s (I stopped using Thunderbird in May 05 & went back to OE).
My suggestions are the same, except substitute the word Thunderbird wherever I said Firefox.
Also you can get back version T-Bird releases - just click on Official Releases under Sources on the left side of this web page.
Sorry for the confusion - it is happening more as I travel into the “golden years”

I’ve had 1.5 installed for a few days and am very happy with it, seems a LOT more stable (my only real concern since I switched to a dedicated newsgroup reader)
Q: Have I got RC2/Final? About dialog tells me
version 1.5 (20051201)
which isn’t very specific (is that a release date in YYYYMMDD format?).
Anyway, keep up the sterling efforts, friends!

Is it possible to have different columns in different folders. For instance in the sent folder I would like a ‘recipients’ column and in the rest I would like a ’sender’ column.
At the moment if I change one folder the rest chance also.
I am using TB1.5 on Win 32 XP SP2
If it is not currently possible could submit it for consideration please
