Future of Thunderbird after 1.5 release

With the release of Thunderbird 1.5, the spotlight is now on how the application development will move on from here. 3 versions are planned, with the release plan for Thunderbird being similar to that of Firefox.

A graphical roadmap has been created by Asa Dotzler.

1.5.0.x (for code off the MOZILLA_1_8_0_BRANCH) will be released from the Gecko 1.8 branch, but will only contain stability and security updates. 1.5 users will want to update to this if bugs prevalent in 1.5 are fixed in these new versions.

2.x (for code off the MOZILLA_1_8_1_BRANCH) will also be released from the Gecko 1.8 branch, involve “UI improvements and other ideas which don’t require changes to existing APIs“, and tentatively be out in summer 2006 (or later).

3.x should be out by mid or late-2007 and will be based on Gecko 1.9. The new Gecko 1.9 foundation will provide a basis for major architectural changes in the backend codes and APIs.

Do note that whatever checkins are made in the MOZILLA_1_8_1_BRANCH will immediately be checked in to the trunk, otherwise, as Brendan Eich goes, “We’ll end up with a big-bang landing as happened with the Aviary 1.0 branch. Also, we are more likely to end up with a bugfix or change to the branch pulling all of Gecko over from the trunk, as happened during Aviary 1.0. And mainly, we must keep enough community QA on the trunk so that it does not regress badly”.

By immediately checking in, all “post-Aviary” mega branch-to-trunk merger problems can be avoided, including “requiring developers to merge and land changes in two places (trunk and a major branch)”, as conflicts, errors and even negligence (of no one’s fault) to check in to both locations (instead of only branch or only trunk) may result. More information, including an FAQ, is available here.

Thunderbird 1.5 Released

Changelog for previous release (Thunderbird 1.5 RC 2) | Changelogs for other releases

Make a donation to the upkeep of The Rumbling Edge.

Released on 11 Jan 06, and this changelog was last updated on 23 Apr 06.

Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 has been released. Release notes are available. This post lists the improvements in Thunderbird 1.5 over the previous aviary branch release 1.0.7. Do note that this list is not exhaustive. It is based on previous changelogs for versions 1.1a1, 1.1a2, 1.5b1, 1.5b2, 1.5rc1 and 1.5rc2.

Generally, with the release of 1.5, the stability of the program has been improved immensely, coupled with better search capabilities compared to the 1.0.x Aviary branch releases. Attachments can now be deleted from emails while support for podcasting, Google Maps and improved spam filtering have been added. Additionally, there is a built-in phishing detector and the program now auto-saves drafts, so in case the program or OS crashes, the draft will not be lost. Spell checking while typing is now possible, and software update improvements have been implemented similar to that of Firefox 1.5.

Improvements over Thunderbird 1.0.x Aviary Branch:

New features:

  • 2920, 288273, 298860: Deleting attachments from messages.
  • 16360: Auto save as draft for mail composition.
  • 240600, 278310, 278312: Spell check as you type.
  • 269483: Automated update to streamline and improve product upgrades and/or extensions.
  • 276632: make autocomplete be more like google suggest (make it most popular results come first)
  • 282157: Google Maps now supported
  • 282174: Podcasting and other RSS Improvements.
  • 282500: Built in phishing detector.
  • 290237: Support for server side spam filtering.
  • UI improvements

    • 262626,284144: Improvements to product usability including redesigned options UI, and SMTP server management.
    • 256545, 297360: Improved user interface for building up search criteria
    • 289091: Improved processing of return receipts for IMAP users
    • 298969: Ability to create message filter actions for forwarding and replying (with a template).
  • Backend

Impact key for security issues listed on the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisories webpage:

  • Critical: Vulnerability can be used to run attacker code and install software, requiring no user interaction beyond normal browsing.
  • High: Vulnerability can be used to gather sensitive data from sites in other windows or inject data or code into those sites, requiring no more than normal browsing actions.
  • Moderate: Vulnerabilities that would otherwise be High or Critical except they only work in uncommon non-default configurations or require the user to perform complicated and/or unlikely steps.
  • Low: Minor security vulnerabilities such as Denial of Service attacks, minor data leaks, or spoofs. (Undetectable spoofs of SSL indicia would have “High” impact because those are generally used to steal sensitive data intended for other sites.)

Improvements over Thunderbird 1.5 RC 2:

Fixes:

  • None. If you have already installed RC 2, then you have the 1.5 final release.
If 1.5 is installed over a previous version (prior to 1.5 final, including RC 2), some users are reporting the program may not start. In this case, the program should be uninstalled, backing up the profile in the process, and reinstalling the application.
