Not sure if this is useful info, but an install over 1.0 on Win2000 went without a problem.

Sorry, but Thunderbird just isn’t ready for primetime yet. There are crashers and hangers that no developer ever had a look at:

or bug 272729 or many other bugs filed against Thunderbird. If the mozilla foundation wants to abandon the suite they first have to make the alternatives worthful contenders. Firefox is there for most people and for some not but Thunderbird really has a lot of work pending.
